Moodboard- Pink Challenge At Finishing Touch Interiors!

It's Monday again and it's another installation of moodboard challenge at Sarah's blog, Finishing Touch Interiors. This is the final challenge and it's named the Pink Challenge, an open challenge to help raise awareness for breast cancer. The rule being it can be any room as long as it is decorated in pink.

I know I wanted to do a modern room right away and decided on designing a modern living room. The feeling and ambiance I was looking for is a young, fun and stylish modern space with a classic twist. It took me some time to find the right wallpaper but in the end it's worth it because it makes such a design statement. Here's what my moodboard looks like.

What are your thoughts? Do you like my pink room? I wish I can replicate this design for my future mom cave because it's one of my favorite designs so far! If you are wondering what other designers come up with for this challenge, please click here.

Moodboard- Moodboard Challenge At Finishing Touch Interiors!

Time really flies and it's Monday again, and it's time for another 'Moodboard Monday Challenge' at Sarah's Blog, Finishing Touch Interiors. This week's challenge is 'Beauty Spa'.

To me, a beauty spa automatically conjures a feeling of tranquility and relaxation so I wanted to bring in some natural elements using natural river rocks as the focal wall and white pebbles as the flooring. I also chose a combination of modern and classic pieces for a fresh new look.  Here's what my moodboard look like. Let's take a look.

What are your thoughts? Do you like my vision of a stylish beauty spa? Sarah has invited other designers to join her in the moodboard challenge as well. If you want to see what she and other designers came up with, please click here.

As a reminder, Sarah will also be hosting an open challenge on Monday, February 6 with the Pink Challenge to help raise awareness for breast cancer. This challenge is open to everyone. Just send an email with your PDF moodboard and your details to Sarah at sarah@finishingtouchinteriors.co.uk by Friday, February 3. There will be a prize for a winner. A client's living room project!

I just wrapped up a client's online decorating project recently. Remember the online room design giveaway I did just before Christmas? I had two winners and one of them is the lovely Tara from The Silver Lining. She needed help to pull her living room together.

Her living room is quite neutral but she decided to go bolder for a change. In her questionnaire, she told me that she is not afraid of colors and would like to incorporate some patterns in the new design. Her favorite color is green and blue, particularly turquoise. She also loves antiqued white frames, geometric pillows, mercury glass and mirrors. Overall, she wanted a design that feels cozy and casual. Her style is a mix of traditional, shabby chic and transitional. She doesn't have a specific budget but she doesn't want to spend a lot.

Here is how her current living room looks like.

Tara and her husband love to entertain their friends and family so they bought a big sectional sofa for the space. The sectional sofa along with the green curtains and ottoman had to stay. She doesn't mind replacing or moving the brown chair and ottoman (from the corner of her living room) elsewhere. The faux finished wall were from the previous owners but now she had painted the walls a nice neutral tan color. The picture below showed us what her new paint looks like.

She also showed me a couple of inspirational pictures of her favorite decor. One of them had built-ins on either side of the fireplace and she wanted to recreate the look. However, she is not keen on the idea because she will be putting the house on the market within a year. Naturally, she doesn't want to spend a lot on something expensive and permanent. I know what she needed and immediately came up with a solution. Here is the moodboard I created for her.

The final version of the entertainment wall.

Since she loves the look of built-ins but doesn't want to spend a lot, I came up the idea of white inexpensive bookcases on either side of her fireplace. I suggested to add some crown and base mouldings on all the bookcases to create a more custom look for a fraction of the price. To create visual interest, I also suggested that she uses shelf papers to line the back of the bookcases with this gorgeous navy blue greek key paper below.

Alternatively, if she prefers less pattern or spending less, she can always paint them in navy blue. Whichever her preference is, the bookcases will still look great. I picked the color for the back of the bookcases based on the picture of this gorgeous rug she showed me.

This rug is beautiful and stylish but with her beige floors and neutral sectional sofa, the rug will easily get lost. So I sent Tara a list of other geometric rugs in her favorite colors for her consideration. She narrowed them down to her three favorites. I helped her picked the one that I thought will look best in her living room. Here is it:

After replacing a few accessories on the bookcases, I helped her to create a moodboard for the console table area. Based on her design style, favorite pieces and what the space needed, I came up with this:

(Please pardon my unattractive presentation, but you get the idea.)

Since her walls are a light neutral color, I wanted something bright to jazz up her vignette. I combined her love of vintage frames and turquoise and came up with a grouping of turquoise vintage frames as the focal point for her console table vignette. She told me she likes pink lately so I picked the pink baskets for an additional splash of colors. I think the pink and turquoise will go so well together. However, she told me she wasn't sure about the pink baskets. She liked the turquoise frames but wanted to incorporate them somewhere else instead. Later, she showed me a couple of square and rectangle mirrors she found in a store that she intended to put over her console table. So I was back to the drawing board again, I mean moodboard again. :)

I changed the table lamps because I thought the table lamps are too clear for the second look so I replaced them with the green based table lamps. However, she is still in love with the clear table lamps. Since I wanted to give her the clear lamps, I decided to go with a patterned shade because everything else is too neutral. I gave her another four choices for her lamp shades.

Which lamp shades do you prefer? Personally, I love the chevron and the lamp shade with the gray stripes. I included the turquoise shade because I know it's Tara's favorite color. I think each of these lamp shade will work wonderfully in this vignette. Again, it's a matter of personal preference. Her final selection:

The final version of the console table vignette.

After finalizing the console table styling and accessories, it's time to pick some beautiful pillows for her sectional sofa. She would like me to incorporate her new pillow into the design. Here is the pillow that she had.

With her pillow in mind, I begin to source the rest of the decorative pillows. And what better place to shop for stylish and beautiful designer pillows at a fraction of the price than Etsy?  Here is what my initial moodboard looked like:

She wasn't sure about the dog pillow and the green pillows. She thought the green pillows were too bright and will not work well with her green curtains. I reassured her by showing her a similar color pillow as her curtains against her sectional sofa. She immediately realized why they won't work. There is not much contrast and the muted green pillow was visually drown by the neutral sofa. The brighter green pillows however will work on her light beige sofa and will provide a pop of much needed color in the space.

She later showed me these pillows she found on the same Etsy pillow store that I emailed her earlier.

So, I made another revision and came up with these three pillow arrangements.

Personally, I really love the pillow arrangement in the middle. Which one is your favorite?

Below is Tara's favorite pillow arrangement among the four different versions.

The final version for the pillow arrangement.

As a designer, I always have a preference for everything but at the end of the day, all I want is for my clients to be happy with the overall design. When they are happy, I feel satisfied because I know I did my job right.

I am looking forward to see the results of Tara's living room makeover. Tara is a joy to work with. She showed me a lot of inspirational pictures and the items she loves and they really helped me to get a sense of her style. Although she is busy with work, she get things done in a timely manner. She also responded to my emails promptly so I can move forward with my design planning and for that, I am very grateful.

I know you are excited to see the end result of our collaboration so I will definitely share any updates or progress on Tara's living room in the future.

Moodboard- Moodboard Challenge At Finishing Touch Interiors!

It's Monday again and it's time for another 'Moodboard Monday Challenge' at Sarah's blog, Finishing Touch Interiors. This week's challenge is 'Shabby Chic Bedroom'.

I always envisioned a shabby chic bedroom to be a pretty bedroom, often decorated with floral motifs and well-worn, vintage pieces with a sense of character. The color palette has a more feminine quality and the overall feeling is charming and cozy. This is what I had in mind. Let's take a look.

Moodboard- Moodboard Challenge At Finishing Touch Interiors!

It's Monday again and it's time for another 'Moodboard Monday Challenge' at Sarah's blog, Finishing Touch Interiors. This week's challenge is 'Retro Hotel Room'.

When I think of a retro room, I think about retro colors like olive green, orange and mustard yellow. I have to admit this is one of the most challenging moodboards I have ever done so far. It is not easy to find a beautiful retro bed and accessories that I like. The look I was going for is a stylish retro hotel room with pops of bright, happy colors furnished with both retro and mid century modern pieces. This is what I came up with.

What are your thoughts? Do you think I have successfully created a retro hotel room or otherwise? Do you like the assortment of colors I used? Sarah has invited other designers to join her in the moodboard challenge as well so if you want to see what other designers came up with, please click here.

Moodboard- Moodboard Challenge At Finishing Touch Interiors!

Recently, my friend Sarah invited me to join her and other designers for a month long of 'Moodboard Monday Challenge' at her blog, Finishing Touch Interiors. This week's challenge is 'The Man Cave'.

When I think of a man cave, I immediately envisioned a rustic den or a basement with a seating area and a play area. I wanted to design a cool space for a guy so he can chill out whether to watch his favorite game or play pool with his friends. I also wanted this space to feel masculine, fresh and stylish. This is what I came up with.

Mood board- Sexy and sophisticated living room!

When I think of a bachelor pad, I always think of a sexy, stylish and sophisticated space. And what better way to create a sexy place for a guy than using moody dark walls to create a sense of mystery and intrigue?

So, to get started on my mood board, I selected a geometric wallpaper in a dark gray followed by a handsome brown leather sofa with clean lines. In either side of the sofa, I incorporated two stylish and sturdy gold side tables with a basket weave detail to add interest. To create contrast against the dark walls and other "heavier" furniture pieces, I selected two sphere-based table lamps with white shades to lighten things up.

Next, I picked a round elegant gold mirror as a focal point for the room. The repeated shape of the round mirror and the sphere table lamps helps to create a sense of cohesion. To keep things lighter and airier, I decided to bring in a glass rectangular coffee table with a subtle pattern that mimics the look of the wallpaper. A green tufted leather chair is chosen for a splash of color and a cow hide rug was selected to ground the overall design.

What are your thoughts on my design? Would you create something similar for a bachelor's living room? When you think of a bachelor pad, would you immediately think of sexy and sophisticated as well?

Mood board- Luxurious and elegant master bathroom!

I have always love the look of a fresh, eclectic and luxurious bathroom with a touch of elegance. So today, I thought it would be fun to create a moodboard to reflect that. First, I started with the classic white carrara marble subway tiles to convey a sense of timeless elegance and luxury. Next, I picked a rustic double sink console to add warmth and create contrast against the marble tiles. Then, I selected a pair of sleek, polished nickel rectangle mirrors, wall sconces, accessories and finally the mosaic hexagon tiles flooring to complete the look. What do you think of the results? Do you like it or otherwise? Your thoughts?

Mood board- Modern baby nursery!

Personally, I really love the look of a modern nursery so I created one today in the form of a mood board for fun! I selected a whimsical wallpaper as my starting point and I continued to add the basics such as the baby crib, a changing station, a rocking chair, an ottoman and two pair of curtains. Next, I layered my room with accessories which included a persimmon striped rug, a light fixture, a floor lamp, some artwork, a cascading mobile, a side table, three floating shelves, a decorative pillow and an adorable elephant laundry hamper. A baby nursery is not complete without some toys so I added a doll and a rocking horse to the mix.

Overall, I wanted a modern, fun, stylish, cheery and whimsical baby nursery. What are your thoughts? Some of the pieces I picked in this room are low end and some are high end. Which piece do you think is the most expensive? And which item do you think is the least expensive?

Answer: The most expensive piece in this nursery is the adjustable light fixture, named Zoom Chandelier retailing at $1,700, designed by Floyd Paxton and the least expensive item is the pair of orange curtains, retailing at $20 per pair at Target.

Mood board- Traditional And Eclectic Dining Room!

I have created three mood boards previously but none of them were dining rooms so I decided to create one today. I first started with a slightly more traditional wallpaper, a chinoiserie style wallpaper with bird, aviary and branch details by Schumacher followed by a pair of matching red pagoda mirrors. I selected the pair of red pagoda mirrors because I wanted a pop or color in an unexpected way. Next, I came up with the salvaged wood dining table and the red French style dining chairs. Ideally, I wanted to have six dining chairs but obviously the mood board can only fit two, at the most but you get the idea. For the final touch, I added a couple more accessories to complete the final design and here it is.

What do you think of the overall design? Do you like the color palette? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Blog link-up- Mood board Monday Party: Wallpaper

Today, when I was visiting Lisa's blog at A Room With A View, something caught my eye. She was linking up her mood board to a linky party at Sarah's blog, Pewter & Sage. I have seen many DIY project or room link-up but seldom came across a mood board link-up. Naturally, I got curious and decided to pay a visit. I thought it might be fun to check out a new linky party and a new blog. It turned out that Sarah's Monday's inspiration is wallpaper, and she had a joint collaboration between herself at Pewter & Sage and Cathy at Room Rx. Together, they picked out four beautiful patterned wallpapers from Layla Grayce. To those who are interested, they can select a favorite wallpaper among the four and create a room around it. Below are the four choices of wallpapers:

Can you guess which one is my favorite wallpaper out of the four? I am immediately drawn to the first one because I like the beautiful color combination. It's unique and striking. I designed this mood board using a program named MyDeco. This time (my third time creating a mood board), I decided to source every item on my own instead of depending on what is available on the website. Since I have not designed a home office before, this is what I came up with:

A Stylish And Feminine Home Office

Sources:

Office desk: Jett Desk

Message  board: Burlap Message Board

Fabric samples: Tangier Frame Print

Fresh flower: Telefloras Beauty Secret

This mood board was quite time-consuming (as expected) but I really enjoyed the process of putting everything together. What are your thoughts? Can you visualize this home office? You can check out other mood boards here.

Mood board- Classic and chic master bedroom!

Today, I was playing with Olioboard and decided to create a classic master bedroom with a modern twist. I am not really familiar with this program so I just pick whatever was in there. I do not have any specific color palette or furniture pieces in mind, I just went with what caught my eye. And here is what I came up with.

Can you visualize this whole room with white walls and green trellis wallpaper as the focal wall behind the bed? What are your thoughts? Let me know what you think!

My first mood board!

I have always wanted to make my own mood board but I didn't know how. Many bloggers mentioned that they used Polyvore to create their mood boards so today, I gave it a try. Needless to say, I really love it. However, there is one problem. I couldn't import images from other websites despite attempting to use the 'clipper' function a few times. I followed the instructions closely but this is what I got instead, "Sorry! Items from polyvore.com may not be imported." Have any of you encountered this problem? Do you have any idea how to fix it?

Anyway, since I am very determined to learn how to do this, I created a mood board using the limited items I found on the website and this is what I came up with. For paint color on the walls , I would use a lighter shade of gray using 'Farrow & Ball Pavilion Gray 242' but any brand of interior paint with a similar shade will do.

'Farrow & Ball Pavilion Gray 242'

My mood board.

Modern, chic and glamorous living space.

What do you think? Please note that all items in my mood board are not done according to scale. This is my first attempt with mood board and I did it solely for fun.

Anyway, to all experienced Polyvore users out there, if you know any other ways to import items from other websites to Polyvore, please let me know. Also, do you know any good websites or wonderful software that provide similar functions? Any feedbacks and suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
